A Message to the Class of 1970 from Terry Slaughter
OK, I was breezing through Dothan this past Saturday, coming south, going north. As I approached the circle I sort of felt as if I was at a crossroad. “Do I turn left and hit the circle to catch again 231 North? Or do I stay 231 North and go through town.?” It was an easy choice. I bypassed the circle and headed through town. I really wanted to see DHS. I really don’t think many days go by without me thinking of that place. More importantly I think of the people who were in that place: my classmates, my teachers, my mentors. They are all wrapped into such a robust memory bank. Now I am not so idealistic to believe everyone feels the same way that I do. But it is what it is. I miss the place. I miss you. I cherish the day when we will see each other again. SOON. Terry |

![]() September 2, 1951 - November 13, 2017 Born in Cullman, Alabama Resided in Springfield, Virginia Beverly Lane Nicholas of Springfield, Virginia, died in her sleep on November 13, 2017, from complications of heart disease. She was the beloved and loving wife of Roy C. Pettis, Jr.; they were married for over 41 years. She leaves a hole no one can fill. Ms. Nicholas was born in Cullman, Alabama, the only daughter of William F. Nicholas and Leola B. Nicholas. She grew up in Dothan, Alabama, where her family moved when she was six. She studied at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, and Virginia Polytechnic University and State University (now usually called Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg Virginia. In addition to those locations, she lived in: Panama City, Florida; Atlanta, Georgia; McLean, Virginia; Sunnyvale, California; Brussels, Belgium; and Springfield, Virginia. In the Dothan High School Chess Club she met Roy Pettis, who became her best friend. When they went away to different colleges, they reached out to each other and began dating. They were married on December 13, 1975, at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Atlanta Georgia. Their marriage was the fundamental heart of her life; they were as intertwined as two souls can be. Bev worked professionally as a Human Factors Engineer, an engineer who focuses on the design of equipment and interfaces to maximize usability and safety. It is a discipline that combines industrial engineering with psychology and physiology. She learned this profession in the Masters program of the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech. She worked as a Human Factors Engineer at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company for over a decade, and left to work as a freelance engineer for Silicon Valley start-ups. Some highlights of her contributions included the environmental controls for the Space Cargo Transportation System, design of the extravehicular activity equipment for the astronauts on STS-36, leading a team for re-design of the Emergency Action Message System, and being part of teams that designed the control interface for the Theater High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system and the cockpit for the F-22 fighter. After Lockheed, she worked on a variety of early World Wide Web projects, including the transition of automobile repair manuals to a web-based interface. She retired from professional work in 2007, but never stopped reading the literature and interacting with colleagues about the profession she believed in passionately. Her work affected millions of consumers when she worked as part of a cable-company consortium to develop the “on-line TV guide” that has become the standard interface for cable TV. In that project she worked closely with Japanese manufacturers to develop, but minimize, the required changes to standard TV remote controls so that the controls could work interactively with cable services for the first time. Until voice control takes over completely, her work will be embedded in a design you likely use every day. Bev’s non-professional passions were animals, particularly dogs, reading, and science fiction fandom. The later took her all over the world to attend the World Science Fiction Convention, and led to a love of travel and exploring new places. She also usually had some science fiction television program that fascinated her and led to on-line interactions with other fans. Some particular stories that grabbed her were Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost, Battlestar Galatica, and Game of Thrones. Usually she discovered the programs and drew Roy and her other friends into watching, since she could describe the works with contagious enthusiasm. She had similar passions about written fiction, with a special love for the works of Robert A. Heinlein, Connie Willis, Neil Gaiman, Roger Zelazny, Edward Hoch, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, and Rex Stout. She was also fascinated by do-it-yourself decorating, and always embellished her homes with special decorative touches and art deco antiques. She took pleasure in helping other people, and was active in church and local volunteering activities, usually with a focus on either encouraging the interest of girls in science and engineering or with organizing some form of musical activity. She is survived by her beloved husband, Roy Pettis, and two dogs, Tonto and Kato. Everyone who has known her will find their life a little emptier without her wit, persistence, inventiveness, perspective, and loving empathy. In lieu of flowers, or if you just want to celebrate her life, please make donations to the Washington Animal Rescue League (her favorite charity) or to the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (for the profession she loved). |

I just received word today that our classmate, Edward Paulk, passed away yesterday, June 28th, 2015, around 5:00 p.m. He had suffered from Cancer for the past couple of years and fought a brave battle, but the cancer won.
I talked with Edward’s sister Amy Dunaway today and she said there will be no service (Edward wanted it that way.) If you would like to make a donation, please do so with the American Cancer Society. I personally talked with Edward about 3 weeks ago. I had left him a message and he returned my call. We had a very nice chat. He said he was about to start a new treatment and could not come to the reunion, because he needed to be home and near his doctors when starting this new medication. His sister said he died peacefully in his chair. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. |

Feb 10, 2013
I found out last night that classmate Ronald Coleman is in the hospital at Flowers Hospital having had a heart bypass. I went to visit him today and he said he had surgery 10 years ago and they put in 4 stints. One of the stints had closed up and they had to do a bypass to eliminate the problem. He is hoping to go home tomorrow. He looked really good and is anxious to get home. He will, of course, do out-patient physical therapy.
I asked him if he minded if I let his classmates know about it and he said it was alright. Please keep Ronald in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from his surgery.

Click Here to read Lamonne Powell's ObituaryIn the Dothan Eagle on May 13, 2011, it said that Jesse Lamonne Powell passed away. I don't think he actually graduated with us at DHS, but he did go through most of High School and Jr. High with some of us. I thought should post this on our website so that the ones of you that remember him will know.
I remember that he went to Cloverdale Elementary School (the Cloverdale gang certainly should remember him), Young Junior High then Dothan High School. He was in our class in 1969, but not in 1970. He was our classmate and we should keep his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Just had an update on Fred. He's off the ventilator and might even be moved to a room soon. Once he is able to leave the hospital, he will stay in an apt on UAB Campus for about a month. I think they must have to monitor for rejection or something like that?

Fred Jones has been out of work, for a 3 or 4 months, with liver problems. He had been at Southeast Medical Center but was sent to UAB in B'ham this past Wednesday, the 2nd of Feb. That same day (very unexpected) they told him they had a liver donor and set him up for transplant yesterday, the 3rd. Except for a few minor complications he is holding his own and will be in ICU a couple of weeks. I am not related to Fred but he's a friend and co-worker. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and I thought you might want to post.

Danny Sharp talked to Bo’s mom this morning. Bo is still at HealthSouth until Wednesday. He had called the ambulance himself to take him home yesterday, but the ambulance driver called the doctor and they convinced him to stay another day or two. Doesn’t that sound like Bo? His mom has got a hospital bed all set up at home with everything he needs. That’s all we know for now. I’ll send updates as I receive them.
January 3, 2011
Bo Nelson had his foot amputated recently and went home today from rehab at his insistence. Danny Sharp talked to Frances, Bo’s brother, and Frances thought it was too early to go home…..but that’s Bo. Danny tried to reach Bo several times at his mother’s house and his cell phone, but no answer or voice mail available. Linda Hollis has already sent a card to him. I just wanted to notify all classmates and ask you to remember Bo as he recently had a foot amputated. Your thoughts and prayers will be appreciated.
